The Measure of Beauty

There is nothing more confusing than the measure of beauty. How do we measure it? Who gets to say what is beautiful and what is not?

From the looks of things, the moment something starts trending, we tend to see that as something beautiful. For instance, not so long ago light skinned guys were the ‘it thing’ and everybody wanted a taste, now it’s dark-skinned guys ruling. There are so many memes on how dark skinned guys are ‘extra’ and all.

Who gets to decide on this? Is there like a survey that happens once in a while somewhere in the world? Contouring our faces and perfecting mathematics on our eyebrows wasn’t ‘beautiful’ until very recently. Stretchmarks and cellulite were seen as something hideous and a disgrace but now it’s a different story. This is confusing.

The dictionary defines ‘beauty’ as “the qualities that give pleasure to the senses”. An individual’s sense though! Just because the mass feels as though you become ‘bae-able’ if you have money and drive an expensive car doesn’t make you any less bae-able if you don’t have that. Just because the mass feels as though eating at a certain restaurant is beautiful and makes you look like you’ve got ‘taste’ doesn’t mean you have to find it beautiful too and rush there broke. Just because the mass feels as though big booty is beautiful doesn’t mean you should take up on squatting exercises – embrace your booty size.

In a way, it seems like people get scared to show and talk about their kinda beauty especially if it goes against with what the majority favors.

As individuals we see beauty in different things. For me, there is nothing more beautiful than the sky, it has so much to offer – clear calming blue sky, super white clouds, super dark heavy-looking clouds, a rainbow that fades away in no where, the million shades of grey on a cold day, lightnings that terrify me, the sunset cooking the clouds and making them orange, the sunset showing off all shades of red, orange and purple, THE STARS, THE MOON! Goodness gracious me!

I find beauty in the hidden things and things we don’t really take time to admire or notice – tea in a demitasse, the fine details on the design of a vase, freckles, that gap between the front teeth and an upright posture.

People will forever and always keep changing their concept on what’s beautiful and what is not so if you are going to keep trying to catch up, you are going to drain yourself and regret not embracing what you find beautiful. Stick to your own definition of ‘beauty’ and anyone who forces you to think otherwise isn’t worth stressing over.

  1. You speak with wisdom young lady. The world wants us to believe what they tell us is beautiful and sadly, so many fall for it. Love is not the external attributes such as skin tone, eye or hair color, height or weight. The Bible make this clear in that it is not the outward adornments. Beauty is what shines forth from a persons heart such as kindness, integrity, character, honesty, humility, love, gentle words, putting others before themselves, forgiveness and grace. Become these and ones true beauty will shine forth that love will automatically come.

  2. That’s really something that always makes me wonder how can the whole world have same concept and idea of beauty.. it’s too weird even if we go by dictionary meaning the concept of perceiving anything and the way one perceive things is totally different from each and every individual… How can it be decided that this is beautiful for all and vice versa..

  3. It is impossible to measure….completely subjective. And yet, we still classify those as ugly. Guess there has to be opposites in this world …. It it breaks my heart though because so many kill themselves for beauty. Surgery, bleaching skin, eating disorders, tanning….beauty means so much in today’s society…. It means fame, money and power!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Great post!

  4. You find beauty in the sky – I find it in the sea and her ever changing moods. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and thankfully we don’t all see the same beauty.
